Introduction to Professor Xiao Chuanguo: Inventor of the Xiao Procedure
Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo pioneered the “Artificial Nerve-Visceral Nerve Reflex Arc” surgery (Xiao procedure) internationally, tackling a global medical challenge and creating the first surgical procedure invented by a Chinese person and named after a Chinese individual. The department is a leader in the field of international Neuro-Urology.

Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital’s Urology Department, under the leadership of its founder Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo, has become a referral center in China for complex urological conditions. The department includes a general ward, outpatient surgical rooms, endoscopy operating rooms, cystoscopy examination rooms, lithotripsy centers, and urodynamics centers for treatment and diagnostic purposes. Additionally, the department is divided into several subspecialties including General Urology, Urological Oncology, Pediatric and Female Urology, Prostate, and Reconstructive Urology, with some subspecialties excelling at an international or domestic level.
About Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo
Xiao Chuan-Guo, a 62-year-old Chinese male, holds the title of Second-Level National Professor, Chief Physician, and Doctoral Supervisor. His academic journey includes studying at the Institute of Urology, University of London, from 1987 to 1988. From 1988 to 1990, he served as a lecturer at Eastern Virginia Medical School in the USA. His tenure as an Assistant Professor and Director of Urological Research at the State University of New York spanned from 1991 to 1999. Between 2000 and 2007, he was an Associate Professor of Urology at New York University School of Medicine.
From 1997 to 2010, Xiao held several prestigious positions at Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, including Director of Urology, Director of the Institute of Urology, and Editor-in-Chief of the Clinical Urology Journal. Since 2011, he has been the Dean of Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital in Shenzhen. He reached the final round of the Chinese Academy of Sciences fellowship selection in 2003 and 2005.
Xiao Chuan-Guo is renowned for being the first to propose and prove the “artificially established somatic-visceral reflex arc” in neuroscience, leading to the development of the “artificial reflex arc” technique. This innovative approach is used for treating neurogenic bladder caused by spinal cord injury or congenital myelomeningocele, establishing him as a leader in this research area.
Throughout his career, Xiao has directed a significant project under the National Science and Technology Ministry’s 973 Program, a National Natural Science Foundation project, a National Outstanding Youth Fund project, and three key clinical projects under the Ministry of Health, amassing over 30 million yuan. Additionally, he has led six NIH projects in the United States, totaling over 3 million dollars. In 2003, he was named the chief scientist for the 973 Program project focused on “Applied Basic Research on Neural Damage Repair and Functional Reconstruction.”
Xiao Chuan-Guo’s contributions to science and medicine have earned him numerous awards, including the Second National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, the First Prize in Natural Science from Chinese Universities, and several other first prizes in natural science, scientific and technological invention, and scientific and technological progress from Hubei Province and Wuhan City. He has also received the Wu Jieping Medical Award, the He Liang He Li Science and Technology Progress Award, the American Urological Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award, and the prestigious JACK LAPIDES Prize in neuro-urology in 2003 and 2005. In 2006, he was recognized as one of the “Top Ten Innovators of Hubei Province” and was awarded a special government allowance by the State Council.
The institution became a designated hospital for medical insurance and work-related injuries in Shenzhen. It signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with Shenzhen’s Second People’s Hospital. It has successively acquired large-scale equipment such as MRI, CT, HIFU, and laparoscopes. It was renamed Shenzhen Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital.
