A Girl’s Success Story: The Impact of the Xiao Procedure

Xiao Fei, a 3-year-old girl from Huaihua, Hunan, with a myelomeningocele, was discharged from the hospital after a successful surgery at Xiao Chuan-Guo hospital. Her mother, filled with emotion, said,

“Xiao Fei is recovering remarkably well. She’s fortunate; though born with congenital myelomeningocele, we found Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo right away. Unlike other children with myelomeningocele who suffer from seeking ineffective treatments, Xiao Fei didn’t have to endure that pain. We’re deeply thankful to Professor Xiao!”

At birth, a soft, round lump about 1cm in diameter was noticed at Xiao Fei’s sacrococcygeal area. Her parents found many articles online about such lumps, understanding that it was likely myelomeningocele. They also learned that many patients who underwent detethering surgery didn’t significantly benefit. Thus, they hesitated to seek treatment.

When Xiao Fei was over 3 years old, the lump grew to 5cm, accompanied by symptoms like difficulty urinating and a weak urine flow. Her parents took her to the local hospital in Mayang County, where she was diagnosed with congenital myelomeningocele causing urinary and fecal incontinence. Over these three years, her parents continuously researched this condition online and discovered that only the “Xiao procedure” invented by Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo could effectively treat incontinence caused by congenital myelomeningocele. Despite mixed reviews about this surgery, after seeing many recovery cases of patients sent by foundations on the official website of Shenzhen Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital, they decided to entrust their daughter to Professor Xiao and took her to Shenzhen Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital.

Upon their arrival, Professor Xiao thoroughly reviewed Xiao Fei’s medical records and conducted a comprehensive pre-surgical examination. He reassured her parents that her condition wasn’t as severe as they feared and congratulated them for seeking treatment promptly. He promised they would restore her normal urinary and bowel functions, allowing her to be as healthy and beautiful as any other little girl.

After admission, Xiao Fei underwent a urodynamic test, which showed a small bladder capacity and poor detrusor contraction. On the fourth day of admission, Professor Xiao performed four surgeries on her: the Xiao procedure (artificial somatic-central nervous system-autonomic reflex pathway surgery), spinal cord detethering, myelomeningocele repair, and partial resection of an extradural spinal tumor, all completed successfully within an hour. Xiao Fei recovered well, with stitches removed ten days later. She is expected to regain urinary and bowel functions within six months to a year after surgery. Upon discharge, Professor Xiao specifically instructed that Xiao Fei must undergo monthly ultrasound and renal function tests at a local hospital and return to Shenzhen for follow-up if any discomfort arises.
