“I never thought my injury from 10 years ago, which caused a decade of urinary incontinence, could finally be cured. The Xiao procedure is truly miraculous. I’m grateful to Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo for giving me a new lease on life,”
Xiao Wei said after the Xiao procedure successfully treated his urinary incontinence.
Xiao Wei, a spirited young man just turning 30 from Puning, Guangdong, got married at 20. As he was establishing his family and striving to build his career, a tragic accident brought him immense pain.
Shortly after his marriage, while hiking with his new wife, Xiao Wei, aiming for a cool photo, ventured too close to the edge of a platform without railings. Losing his footing, he fell down a 5-meter drop. Landing on his feet, he immediately felt severe pain in his lower back, his legs went numb, and he couldn’t move them. Rushed to the emergency room at Pingshan Hospital in Shenzhen by his wife, doctors diagnosed him with an L1 compression fracture and performed surgery to stabilize the fracture. Although his leg function gradually recovered post-surgery, Xiao Wei found it increasingly difficult to urinate and control his bladder and bowels.
Despite visiting several hospitals for treatment, his condition remained unresolved. Disheartened, Xiao Wei considered giving up on treatment, but his wife’s unwavering support and encouragement kept him hopeful. Over the ten years following his injury, the support from his devoted wife and loving parents was his greatest comfort.
Two years ago, having felt no sensation to urinate for a long time, Xiao Wei suddenly experienced bladder pain, mistakenly thinking his urination might return to normal. However, a hospital visit in Puning revealed bladder stones. He underwent two surgeries: one to remove the stones and another to remove the internal fixation. Although these surgeries were just episodes in his life post-injury, they led him to important information about regaining his health.
The doctor who operated on Xiao Wei suggested consulting Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo in Shenzhen, known for top-level surgery in this field. Initially hesitant, given the long duration of his injury, Xiao Wei’s wife persistently encouraged him. His urinary incontinence, causing an unpleasant odor, interfered with his business endeavors, often ruining first impressions. Realizing the increasing impact of his incontinence on his life and persuaded by his wife, he decided to seek treatment at Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital in Shenzhen.
Upon arrival, the young couple was warmly welcomed, and Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo personally reassured Xiao Wei of his recovery from incontinence after a thorough examination and MRI, which showed an old L1 vertebral compression fracture, L4 and L5 disc herniation, bilateral hydronephrosis with left ureteral dilation. The diagnosis included neurogenic bladder, bilateral hydronephrosis with ureteral dilation, post-lumbar fracture surgery, and post-bladder stone removal surgery. Professor Xiao performed several surgeries on Xiao Wei, including the Xiao procedure (artificial somatic-central nervous system-autonomic reflex pathway), spinal canal expansion and decompression, spinal nerve adhesion release, left ureteral reimplantation into the bladder, and ureteral adhesion release.
Due to the long duration of Xiao Wei’s injury and the multiple surgeries, his recovery took a week longer than typical patients. However, his recovery was remarkable. Upon discharge, Xiao Wei felt the urge to urinate for the first time in ten years, emotionally embracing his wife and tearfully thanking Professor Xiao. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to repay his wife’s unwavering support and his parents’ love.
