Neurogenic bladder can lead to incontinence in patients, and without treatment, more severe urinary system diseases may follow, even leading to serious kidney diseases that can endanger a patient’s life. Additionally, this physical condition can also cause psychological harm. Timely professional treatment can help patients quickly escape the troubles of disease. Currently, the “Artificial Somatic-Central Nervous System-Autonomic Reflex Pathway” surgery, commonly known as the Xiao procedure, is the only effective treatment for such diseases. Last September, a young Tibetan child named Xiao Xin (pseudonym) from Xining, Qinghai, went to Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital in Shenzhen for treatment and is now in good condition, not only gaining the ability to control bowel movements but also showing significant improvement in urinary function according to urodynamics tests.

After traveling thousands of miles in search of a cure, the family finally found relief in Shenzhen. Three years ago, joy and sorrow came to the family at the same time. Soon after Xiao Xin was born, the child was diagnosed with incontinence and weakness in both legs at a top hospital in Qinghai. The diagnosis was a rare spinal neuroblastoma, and on August 19, 2013, Xiao Xin was transferred to a children’s hospital in the capital. Despite tumor removal and chemotherapy, Xiao Xin’s incontinence symptoms did not improve, and the child also developed clubfoot. Afterward, Xiao Xin visited several hospitals, including one affiliated with Tsinghua University and the Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, but no miracles occurred.

Xiao Xin’s condition was complicated, primarily because nerve damage or severe adhesion caused by earlier surgical treatments led to incontinence and deformity in both legs. When most hospitals across the country were at a loss, the family traveled thousands of miles to Shenzhen and finally found a true expert in the field of neuro-urological surgery—Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo.

With skilled hands and a compassionate heart, Professor Xiao decided to personally perform the surgery. He is the inventor of the Xiao procedure. Since the establishment of Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital in Shenzhen, more than 3,000 patients have undergone the Xiao procedure, freeing them from the torment of their conditions.

Xiao Xin’s surgery was scheduled promptly. Overall, the surgery was complex, requiring the Xiao procedure, spinal nerve loosening, and spinal canal expansion and decompression to be performed simultaneously. Just four days after Xiao Xin was admitted, Professor Xiao personally took charge of the surgery. With his exceptional skill and extensive experience, he successfully completed all three procedures smoothly.

After a period of recovery, Xiao Xin was discharged on September 18, and both Xiao Xin and his family praised Professor Xiao’s medical ethics and skills. They also voluntarily shared their story with every patient suffering from neurogenic bladder due to spinal cord injury, knowing well that after enduring the torment of disease, every patient deeply desires to be healed and reborn.

Due to the long duration of Xiao Wei’s injury and the multiple surgeries, his recovery took a week longer than typical patients. However, his recovery was remarkable. Upon discharge, Xiao Wei felt the urge to urinate for the first time in ten years, emotionally embracing his wife and tearfully thanking Professor Xiao. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to repay his wife’s unwavering support and his parents’ love.
