Life is resilient and beautiful, and even in the face of adversity, people always yearn for something better. Accidents and illnesses can be terrifying, but with the right and timely treatment, one can still continue to bloom beautifully in life. A vivid example is a young man from Shaanxi who is gradually recovering at Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital.

To cure myelomeningocele and clubfoot, a young man from Shaanxi found hope at Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital. In Shaanxi, young men are often humorously referred to as “leng wa,” describing their seemingly cool and stubborn nature. However, Peng Ke, a handsome young man born in 1989, radiates a different vibe: he is cheerful and sunny, and his smile betrays no sign of his serious medical condition. Peng Ke was born with congenital myelomeningocele and a resulting left foot high-arched clubfoot. Despite the severe pain and inconvenience caused by his condition, he maintained an optimistic outlook on life and even moved to Shenzhen to work, providing some income for his impoverished family.

While working in Shenzhen, Peng Ke kept looking for treatment opportunities for his congenital myelomeningocele and the accompanying complications like incontinence, which brought much pain and trouble to his life. One day, he received exciting news: a Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital nearby specialized in treating congenital myelomeningocele! After researching and inquiring, Peng Ke decided to seek treatment there. In August 2013, when he arrived at Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital with a urinary bag, his positive energy and strength deeply impressed the doctors.

After examination, Peng Ke was diagnosed with congenital myelomeningocele, neurogenic bladder, and left foot high-arched clubfoot. Professor Xiao then performed the Xiao procedure on him, and Professor Gao conducted a left Achilles tendon lengthening surgery and talonavicular-cuneiform joint fusion. All surgeries were successful, and Peng Ke happily recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

However, accidents can happen unexpectedly. Just as Peng Ke was enjoying a normal life after curing his congenital condition, he accidentally fell off his bicycle, resulting in a poorly healed fracture in the middle section of his left tibia. Despite undergoing surgery at a local hospital, he couldn’t walk properly due to unbearable pain in his left leg, which he managed with painkillers. After enduring for seven to eight months, he remembered Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital, which had cured his congenital condition. Knowing that orthopedic issues were also Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital’s specialty and considering his congenital left leg was shorter than the right, he decided to get treated there again to become fully healthy. In June of this year, he made up his mind and returned to Shenzhen.

The doctors at Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital warmly welcomed the sunny young man back. After examining him, Professor Gao found that his left leg was 3.6cm shorter than his right, with left foot drop and external rotation deformity. Professor Gao performed a surgery to correct the malunited fracture of the left tibial midsection with external fixation (leg lengthening surgery), solving both the nonunion of Peng Ke’s tibia and the discrepancy in leg length. The surgery went smoothly, and the healing process was excellent.

Monthly follow-ups showed good healing of Peng Ke’s tibia, with new bone growth visible in X-rays each month. After several months of recovery, Peng Ke’s left tibia has almost completely healed, and he is expected to have the external fixator removed by the end of the year, allowing him to walk on legs of equal length.

Furthermore, considering Peng Ke’s family’s financial situation, Xiao Chuan-Guo Hospital only charged him a nominal fee for the surgery, which would have cost around a hundred thousand yuan at other hospitals. They also offered him a job as a driver at the hospital. Soon, Peng Ke will be working at the hospital that gave him a new lease on life, alongside Professor Xiao Chuan-Guo, Professor Gao, and other medical staff, contributing to the work of healing and saving lives.
